COTTONWOOD PASS HIKE WITH ALEC

KEARSARGE HIKE

Trek to Chicken Spring Lake via Cottonwood Pass, June 1-3, 2001 -- Near Lone Pine and Mt. Whitney.

Click thumbnails for larger picture.

roadup.jpg (91253 bytes) The view from the road up to Horseshoe Meadows (Trailhead for the Cottonwood Pass trail) is quite spectacular.  The Trailhead is 9900 ft.
cottonwoodsign.jpg (122393 bytes) Here's the trailhead sign.  We're all ready for the hike.
flatcamp.jpg (119452 bytes) We camped only a few minutes from the trailhead, since it was already dinner time and Alec was hungry.
horseshoemeadow0002.jpg (116458 bytes) This is a view of Horseshoe Meadows from the trail to Cottonwood Pass.
alecontrail.jpg (121308 bytes) Very near the summit of the pass.  Alec's pack was about 16 lbs total.  Mine was a little over 30 lbs.  He never complained once.  What a trekker!
alecnearsummit.jpg (119680 bytes) Another angle near Pass.
attop.jpg (62391 bytes) At the summit of the pass, looking East.  Pass elevation is 11,200 ft. or so.
tochickenspring.jpg (126862 bytes) The trail that leads from the pass on the way to Chicken Springs Lake.
camp.jpg (127732 bytes) Chicken Spring Lake.  The trail actually goes up from Cottonwood Pass. I would estimate that the lake is at least 11,400 ft.  You definitely get tired setting up camp, or doing any lifting.
campclose.jpg (131714 bytes) Our campsite at the lake.  Got pretty cold that night, but we were toasty in our 0 degree bags and protected from the wind.
nofish.jpg (103751 bytes) No fish in this lake!
playinsnow.jpg (120462 bytes) Might as well play in the snow.
